Dr. Soumitra Paul is a Professor of Mechanical
Engineering at the Indian Institute
of Technology Kharagpur. He received his Bachelor of Mechanical
Engineering (Hons) degree in 1988 from Jadavpur University,
Calcutta. He joined the Department of
Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur for M. Tech in
Production Science and Technology. In 1994, he was awarded the Ph.D. in
Engineering from the same institute for his work on "Cryogenic Cooling in
Grinding Steels". After obtaining his Ph.D
degree, till October 1995, he was attached to the Laboratory for Flexible Production
Automation, Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology, TU Delft, Delft
as a post doctoral fellow to work on various aspects of Abrasive Water Jet
Machining. He joined his present laboratory as a Visiting Lecturer in December
1995.
He has published more than 60 publications on different aspects of
conventional and non-traditional manufacturing mainly in journals. He is the
co-recipients of a number of research grants from
different sponsoring agencies in India like AICTE,
DOE, DST, MHRD etc. He was also involved as one
of the members of a joint project with Cranfield
University,
He has been awarded the AICTE Career Award for Young Teachers.

He has been involved in establishing a FIST sponsored Advance Research
Lab for High Speed Grinding and PVD Coating of Cutting Tools. He has also
developed jointly course material on “Manufacturing
Processes – II” both in
web and video
format under MHRD sponsored NPTEL programme.
